Residents at Merceode Lodge Care Home Reminisce on VE Day

11 May 2026 Merceode Lodge

Residents and families at Merceode Lodge care home in Marchwood held a lively VE Day celebration at the weekend, complete with sing-a-longs, classic treats, and a lot of dancing.

Gathering in the care home’s lounge, residents and guests enjoyed live music from Lady Natalie, a homemade afternoon tea with classic Victoria sponges and scones, a glass of fizz, and lots of games for all ages.

For 96-year-old resident, Doreen Lupton, the celebration was a trip down memory lane. Doreen said,

“I remember 8th May 1945 very well. There was such joy and celebration, and the street parties would go on into the early hours of the morning.”

Helen Chapman, the General Manager at Merceode Lodge added, “It was incredibly special to bring everyone together to mark such an important occasion in our nation’s history.

“Seeing residents sharing their memories with younger generations, singing along to wartime favourites and enjoying the celebrations with family and friends created a wonderful atmosphere throughout the home.”
