World Traveller Turns 102 at Care Home in Chard

2 June 2026 Gillingham Grange

Gillingham Grange care home in Chard, part of Crystal Care Collection, celebrated a very special milestone as resident Iris Bonner marked her 102nd birthday.

Born in London, Iris was married to her husband, Ron, for 43 years before his passing. Although the couple had no children, Iris has filled her life with adventure and unforgettable experiences.

Among her happiest memories are the many years she spent travelling the world, often independently. Iris embarked on six cruises entirely on her own.

Reflecting on her travels, Iris said, “I loved seeing different places around the world. Going on cruises by myself gave me confidence and showed me that I could do things independently.”

When asked what she is most proud of, Iris replied, “Making it to 102!”

As for the secret to a long life, Iris has her own simple theory:

“I’ve never drunk alcohol, but it could just as easily be good genes or luck!”

The birthday celebrations began in the morning when Iris welcomed visitors and enjoyed opening her cards and gifts. Later in the afternoon, the team at Gillingham Grange surprised her with a birthday cake and gathered to sing Happy Birthday, making the occasion one to remember.

Amanda Whyte, General Manager at Gillingham Grange Care Home, added, “It has been an absolute pleasure to celebrate Iris’s 102nd birthday with her.

“She is a wonderful lady with an incredible story to tell, and we are delighted to be part of such an important milestone.”
