Mildred, 84, Helps Residents Knit for Babies at Royal Sussex County Hospital

84-year-old Mildred Fry and her fellow residents from Furze Field Manor care home in Sayers Common are spending their time hand-knitting baby clothes, which they donate to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

A dedicated member of the Furze Field Manor Knitting Club on a Sunday afternoon, Mildred learnt to knit from age 5, now mentors and teaches other residents each week over a hot drink and a slice of cake.

Mildred said, “I do a lot of knitting as well as doing all I can for my sister, who also lives here. I’ve always enjoyed knitting, especially for babies and little ones – and I’m never out of a job!

“Making the premature baby cardigans for the precious little babies that come too soon is a thrill.”

Once the Knitting Club had wrapped up the clothes, Sara Heath (Customer Relations Manager) and Sam Campbellwood (Senior Carer), visited the hospital to drop off the donation.

Sara said, “We’re incredibly proud of Mildred and the other residents for dedicating their time and skills to such a meaningful cause.

“The knitting club brings everyone together each week, and knowing these handmade clothes will support families and babies at the Trevor Mann Baby Unit makes it even more special.”
