Care Home in Pontefract Marks VE Day with 40’s Themed Celebration

12 May 2026 Fairwood Fields

Fairwood Fields care home in Pontefract marked VE Day in style with a 1940s-themed celebration enjoyed by residents, staff, and visitors.

The whole team came together for the special occasion, with staff dressing in authentic 1940s attire to bring the spirit of the era to life.

Entertainment was provided by The Songbirds, who performed wartime favourites, alongside saxophonist George, helping to get everyone singing, dancing, and waving their flags throughout the day.

93-year-old resident Ellen Moxon said: “I loved The Songbirds. I thought their uniforms were brilliant. It was nice that they sung the songs we used to, so we could sing along and dance too.”

Residents and guests also enjoyed a traditional street party, expertly prepared by the home’s kitchen team.

Lynn Robinson, General Manager at Fairwood Fields, said: “We all love any excuse to get dressed up and have a dance. It was a fantastic day.

“Everyone looked great and were really in the 1940’s spirit. The food was brilliant – the kitchen team did such an amazing job. It was a lovely day all spent celebrating together.”
