Childhood Friends Reunited at Care Home After 77-Year Friendship

26 August 2026 Dale Brook

Two lifelong friends who first met as schoolgirls in Chesterfield in 1949 have found themselves living together, more than seven decades later, at Dale Brook care home.

Margaret Bereford and Alva De Chino first became friends aged just 11 while attending St Helena School in Chesterfield.

After leaving school, both women moved to London to attend teacher training colleges before returning to their hometown to begin successful careers in education. Margaret went on to teach Geography, while Alva specialised in English Language.

Despite building their own lives and careers, their friendship hasn’t wavered for 77 years. Over the decades, they celebrated milestones together, attended each other’s weddings and enjoyed countless holidays, including trips to China and Italy, as well as several cruises.

Earlier this year, Margaret moved into Dale Brook care home in Chesterfield. When Alva later decided it was time to move into residential care herself, Dale Brook seemed the natural choice.

Speaking about their friendship, Margaret said: “We’ve always enjoyed spending time together, it’s worth everything. I’m so glad we found each other.”

Alva added: “You should always appreciate time spent with friends and enjoy life too. Our friendship is the best.”

The pair now enjoy spending time together at the home, reminiscing about their school days, sharing memories of their travels and taking part in activities alongside fellow residents.

Sharon Beecroft, the Customer Relationship Manager at Dale Brook, added: “Margaret and Alva’s friendship is remarkable. To have known each other since childhood and remained such close friends for more than seven decades is incredibly special.

“We’re so happy that they are both part of the Dale Brook family and that they can continue making memories together.”

You can get to know more about life at Dale Brook during the home’s weekly Games Café event, where every Friday from 11:00-12:00 all are welcome to join the residents for board games, cards, and quizzes over light refreshments.
