As we close our Crystal in Bloom competition across Crystal Care Collection homes all over the UK, we wanted to celebrate the incredible gardening knowledge and passion of our residents.
From cherished childhood memories to practical advice for new gardeners, here are some of the wonderful stories and insights shared at Furze Field Manor in Sayers Common…
- Don’t neglect your garden, but don’t overwater your plants
Valerie Aitken (86) loves roses, primroses, irises and bluebells for the colour and beauty they bring to a garden. For her, gardening provides a strong sense of fulfilment. Valerie said,
“I love creating something beautiful and watching plants grow and flourish as a result of the care and attention I give them.”
Valerie’s advice to new gardeners is practical and straightforward: don’t neglect your garden, but don’t overwater your plants either.
- Talk to your plants
Margaret Wainwright’s favourite flowers are daisies, which bring back happy memories of childhood.
“I used to make daisy chains and play games with them, so they have always held a special place in my heart.”
Margaret enjoys watering plants and spending time in the sunshine, finding gardening both relaxing and rewarding. Her gardening tip is one that always raises a smile:
“Talk to your plants. Spending time with them helps you notice what they need and encourages you to look after them well.”
- Don’t give up if plants don’t grow as expected
92-year-old Evelyn Peacock’s favourite plants include roses, lavender, hardy geraniums and spring bulbs.
She appreciates their beauty, fragrance and ease of care, but gardening is about more than flowers alone.
“I enjoy gardening because it attracts wildlife such as bees, butterflies and birds, helping to create a lively and natural environment.”
Evelyn’s advice to new gardeners is, “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and don’t give up if things don’t grow as expected. Gardens need time, patience and nurturing to flourish, but the rewards are well worth the effort.”
- Consistently water plants during dry spells and warm weather
Janet Leech’s (95) favourite plants are Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ and Abelia because they return year after year with minimal fuss while bringing colour to the garden. Janet said,
“I have spent most of my life gardening and have enjoyed being in the garden for over 90 years.
“My advice to new gardeners is to water plants regularly, especially during dry spells. Consistent care helps plants establish strong roots and keeps them healthy and looking their best.”
- Make the most of your garden space
Barbara Neal (79) loves roses, because they bring colour and elegance to any garden. For Barbara, gardening helps her to unwind, and she enjoys seeing the results of the care and attention she gives to her plants. Barbara’s advice to new gardeners is,
“Make the most of the space you have available. No matter how big or small a garden is, there is always an opportunity to grow something beautiful that you can enjoy.”
