A meeting at between a young visitor and a musically gifted resident has created a special intergenerational friendship at Rownhams Manor care home in Southampton.
Ten-year-old Ella, the daughter of a staff member at Rownhams Manor, recently visited the home to introduce her two beloved guinea pigs, Willow and Beatrice.
During the visit, Ella met 87-year-old resident Marilyn Ancell, whose lifelong passion for music sparked a connection between the two generations.
Marilyn has been playing the piano since she was just three years old and continues to share her love of music. Learning of Marilyn’s talent, Ella eagerly asked if she could teach her how to play a song on the piano.
The pair sat together at the piano, where Marilyn patiently taught Ella how to play ‘Happy Birthday’.
Although Marilyn’s deteriorating eyesight can sometimes make reading sheet music more challenging, her remarkable memory for music allows her to continue her passion.
When asked what she loves most about playing the piano, Marilyn said:
“I love how it makes me feel and knowing that others find so much joy in sharing my passion. I enjoyed playing the piano so much as a child and as long as I can read the music, I will keep playing. I’m glad I got to play some tunes with Ella, bring her back again!”
Ella was equally enthusiastic about the experience and couldn’t wait to tell her mum about her special afternoon with Marilyn. She said:
“Mummy, that was one of the best days ever! Can we please do it again, but for longer!”
