Fire Engine Gives Fairwood Fields Residents a Close-Up View of Fire Service Life

7 July 2026 Fairwood Fields

Residents at Fairwood Fields care home in Pontefract welcomed firefighters from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for a visit that offered a closer look at life on the frontline.

Arriving in their fire engine, the crew opened the vehicle’s compartments and showcased the specialist equipment they use to respond to emergencies.

Residents learned how tools such as hydraulic rescue equipment, used to remove car doors, and breathing apparatus work and the situations in which they are needed.

The firefighters also answered questions about their roles and shared facts about the service, including that their new fire engine cost approximately £1 million.

Residents were interested to learn that there are around 980 firefighters across West Yorkshire, with women making up around 9% of the workforce.

During the visit, the crew also explained how they would respond to an incident at a care home. Residents were surprised to hear that as many as 15 fire engines could be mobilised in the event of a major fire.

Resident Carol Otley said: “It was a very interesting day, and we found out lots of information about the fire service. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Lynn Robinson, General Manager at Fairwood Fields, added, “Everyone loves a fire engine and gets excited when they see one go by, so it was great to be able to have one come to the home and get a closer look.

“The residents absolutely loved it, and the firefighters were amazing at explaining what they do. We’re so grateful to have such a thoughtful community around us.”

You can find out more about activities at Fairwood Fields at the home’s weekly Neighbourhood Natter coffee morning, where all are welcome every Wednesday at 11:00 for refreshments and homemade cake.
