Resident Jack Rugg from Somer Valley House care home in Midsomer Norton recently celebrated his 100th birthday.
Born and bred in Bath, Jack joined the Royal Navy at 16-years-old, later serving as a Leading Stoker during the Second World War.
His service took him around the globe, and he fondly recalls the excitement of arriving in Australia for the first time, one of many cherished memories from his years at sea.
After returning from service, Jack married the love of his life, Jean, in 1950. Together they raised two sons, Nigel and Alan. Jack often reflects that his greatest achievements were getting married and having a family.
To mark his centenary, Somer Valley House hosted a special celebration complete with a buffet and live entertainment by singers ‘Once Upon a Dream’ for Jack, his family, and his friends. Jack said,
“I was surprised to see the number of decorations and all of my family and friends; I was so pleased it nearly knocked my socks off. It was the best birthday I could have asked for and I’d like to thank everyone who made it so special.”
When asked about the secret to a long and happy life, Jack offered some wisdom:
“Some days you just have to put one foot in front of the other.”
Emma Curtain, Front of House Manager at Somer Valley House, added, “It was our absolute privilege to celebrate this incredible milestone with Jack. He was donned the ‘Birthday King’ for the day!
“We make every milestone a special one for our residents at Somer Valley House, and we’re so glad that Jack had such an amazing day surrounded by all the people who love him.”
