Residents at Gillingham Grange care home in Chard enjoyed a visit from animal experience specialists Fangs’n’Feathers, who brought along a collection of snakes, lizards and rabbits.
The hands-on session gave everyone the opportunity to meet and handle the animals, with many residents and staff members overcoming their fears and stepping outside their comfort zones.
The Fangs’n’Feathers team shared interesting facts about each animal, helping residents learn more about their unique characteristics and habitats.
94-year-old resident Joan Milliner said, “I had a fear of snakes and didn’t want to hold one at first. However, I saw one of our carers overcome her fear and hold a snake so I thought if others can do it then so can I!
“I was very surprised at how soothing it was to hold and I’m glad it didn’t wriggle about! Afterwards I felt very brave and proud of myself, and I would definitely hold a (small) snake again.”
88-year-old resident Carol Blakeway added, “I really enjoyed meeting and holding the snakes. They felt very smooth. They were animals I never thought I would handle and I’ve never held a snake before moving to Gillingham Grange. It was so nice to see my husband Cliff holding the snakes and the joy it brought him. His face says it all.”
Amanda Whyte, General Manager at Gillingham Grange commented, “The visit was a fantastic experience for our residents. It was wonderful to see so many people challenge themselves, overcome their fears and leave feeling proud of what they had achieved. Activities like these not only provide fun and conversation but also help build confidence.”
You can find out more about events and activities at Gillingham Grange during the home’s weekly Tea on Tuesday events from 10:30, where all are welcome to enjoy light refreshments with the residents.
